CARDIFF - Tues 27th Sept 2011

It's been 3 weeks since the last post and it's been very quiet in the docks but there have been a few arrivals:
On 9th Sept Charlotte Borchard arrived from Leixoes and sailed the same day for Liverpool.  On 13th Bro Designer came in from Milford Haven and returned there on the 14th.  The 15th was a busy day - Judith Borchard arrived from Leixoes and sailed for Liverpool the following day.  Aasvik arrived from Belfast and again on the 23rd on both occassions she sailed the following day for Port Talbot. Holstentor came in from Avonmouth, loaded scrap and sailed for Aviles on 16th.  And finally, Jan V came in from Greenore and sailed for Galway also on 16th.
On 16th Hebridean Princess arrived from Dartmouth and sailed for Pembroke Dock on 18th - I was away on 16th and she sailed very early on 18th so no photograph (update- photo added below, taken when arriving at Capmbeltown  Aug 2012).  Bro Developer arrived from Milford Haven on 18th and again on 22nd on both occassions returned to MH on the following day.  Union Diamond arrived from Belfast on 20th and sailed bound for Antwerp on 23rd.  Container ship Sara Borchard arrived from Liverpool on 25 and sailed the next day for Leixoes.

Currently carrying dredging of the Lady Windsor Lock and the No 2 Dock is the 1968 built Cherry Sand, a self propelled grab hopper dredger - a product of Appledore Shipbuilders..  Seen here heading out to the No 4 spoil ground off Barry.

Arrived from Tjelbergodden on 23rd with a cargo of liquid chemicals.  Having discharged, she returned there today.  The regular tanker on this run is Eships Quest - she's recently been in dry dock in Falmouth, so I don't know whether Bergstraum is a temporary or permanent replacement.

Not much activity since the last post, 3 weeks ago.  Eships Quest arrived from Norway on 11th and sailed for Falmouth (for drydocking) on 13th.

The Russian owned Maltese flagged  Don 2 arrived on 23rd, from Belfast, with a part cargo of packaged timber.  She is seen here departing bound for Spain.

CARDIFF - Tues 7th Sept 2011

Only one arrival since the last post - Bro Gothia slipped in under the cover of darkness on 3rd and sailed after sunset on 4th - so no picture, again!

Patnos (still showing on some AIS sites as Marida Patnos) arrived with a cargo of oil products from Milford Haven, on 6th.  After discharging at the Chevron berth in the Roath Dock, she is seen here departing to sea for orders on 7th September.

The Jubilee Sailing Trusts training ship arrived from Waterford on 5th, and is seen here berthed on Britannia Quay in the Roath Basin.  She is a wooden hulled 3 masted barque, designed and built to enable people of all all physical abilities to sail on a tall ship.

The annual Barry Waterfront Festival is taking place this weekend, and a number of ships are visiting as part of the festival - The sail training ship Stavros S Niarchos is here again this year along with 2 other visitors - commercial traffic as well today............

The River Class Patrol Boat (P281) HMS Tyne berthed in the No 1 dock  and open to the public.

The last surviving wooded hulled three masted top sail schooner. She traded for 30 years under sail, before being given an engine, she then traded for a further 30 years.  In the 1970's she was bought by the Maritime Trust who started preservation work.  In 1998 she was sold into private ownership and underwent complete restoration, back to her original 1900 specification.  More details can be found HERE

CARDIFF - Fri 2nd Sept 2011

Three arrivals on 1st September - the coaster Jan/v arrived light from Bideford, loaded in the Queen Alexandra Dock and sailed for Belfast on 2nd.  Catalina arrived light from Rotterdam and loaded either steel products or scrap and is due to sail for Turkey on 3rd.  Regular container ship Rachel Borchard came in from Leixoes and sailed for Liverpool on 2nd.
