A very early arrival today was the tanker YM Venus, she came in from Fos and is due to sail late tonight (so no photo) having discharged part of her cargo, bound for Runcorn.

Arrived yesterday, from Riga on the Baltic. She is berthed at H shed in the Roath Dock and is discharging what looks like (packs of) sheets of plasterboard or possibly plywood.

BARRY - Sun 28th Aug 2011

Since the last post for Barry, Eships Quest has been in 3 times - on28th July, 14th and 25th August.  Four Stolt ........ tankers have also called - on 16th July Stolt Kite, 26th July Stolt Kingfisher arrived from St Malo and sailed the following day, 4th August Stolt Razorbill arrived from Aughinish and sailed the following day for Antwerp and on 20th August Stolt Tern came in from Le Havre and sailed the same day for Antwerp.

Annegret

Heavy lift ship Annegret had arrived from Shanghai on 27th.  I couldn't see what the cargo was, but guess that it was some large piece of equipment or plant for the local Dow Corning chemical works. The large 'box' alongside is a tank that can be filled with water to act as a counterbalance when the 'lift' is taking place.  She sailed on 29th bound for Emden.

CARDIFF - Fri 26th August 2011

A couple of quiet days , then a flurry of activity - regular arrival Sara Borchard came in from Leixoes and sailed for Liverpool today.

Arrived on 24th from Ceuta.  She berthed on the steel terminal in the Queen Alexandra Dock so guess so was discharging steel products   She sailed in ballast on 28th bound for Emden.  UPDATED Photo -  shows her approaching Cardiff on 17th August 2016.

Had arrived in ballast on 26th from Antwerp.  Another one loading in The Queen Alexandra Dock - it looked like some bulk material being loaded in huge (builders) 'bulk bags' - possibly fertilizer?? - she sailed on 27th bound for Porto Vesme.

A few arrivals since the last post: - on 16th UKD Orca arrived from Mostyn.  On the 17th, tanker Bro Designer arrived from Milford Haven and coaster Luhnau arrived from Inverkeithing with a cargo of scrap metals, sailing on 19th bound for Sharpness.  On 18th container ship Judith Borchard arrived from Leixoes and sailed for Dublin on 19th.

PV Seamark

Ex Swansea Pilot Vessel Seamark (under tow from UKD Sealion) leaves Cardiff bound for her home port of Swansea.  She was withdrawn from service in 2001 and had been in the Roath Basin for about ten years, for the first six or seven of those she had been the headquarters of the Cardiff Sea Scouts.
Last year she was up for sale, and was reported to have been bought for conversion to a liveaboard to be moored on the Thames. I now read on the internet that she is being taken to Swansea where a group has been formed to preserve and get her back into full working order, and possibly running trips out of Swansea.

CARDIFF - Thurs 11th Aug 2011

The port has been very quiet for the past couple of weeks, shipping in general seems to be going through a quiet spell - around the middle of July, ships were departing the channel ports and going straight to anchor off Minehead to await orders.  At one time there were 6 or 7 ships anchored there and 1 or 2 of them had been there for a couple of weeks.
Rachel Borchard arrived from Leixoes on 4th and sailed for Liverpool on 5th.
Taranto (missed this one) arrived on 6th and guess that she discharged a cargo as she sailed for Avonmouth on 10th.
Arriving today: Bro Designer from Milford Haven with a cargo of oil products.
Charlotte Borchard, container  ship on her regular run, inbound from Leixoes - sails for Liverpool on 12th.

Uphusen had arrived from Liverpool on 9th, loaded scrap metal at the EMR berth in the Roath Dock, and is seen here departing for Santander.

HMC Seeker

Almost as soon as Uphusen had cleared the entrance channel, the Damen Shipyard built UK Border Agency/Customs cutter HMC Seeker came in.  Seeker patrols the South Western approaches to the UK and tends to use Swansea for refuelling/re storing but occasionally visits Cardiff for the same.

HMS Express

Arrived back this week after a few months away, and on her usual berth in Penarth Marina is the Archer Class patrol boat Express.  She is used as a training vessel, attached to University of Wales Royal Naval Unit - she provides training to undergraduate students and normally has a crew of 5 plus up to 12 students.
The picture was taken in November 2009 and shows her with a black hull - at the time she was the only Royal Naval surface ship to have a black hull - she now has a grey hull.

Chemical tanker Lydian had arrived from Fos on 27th and having discharged, sailed on 28th for Ghent - I missed seeing her on this occasion.  She is pictured on the Thames where I saw her about 2 years ago.

I've been away for a while, shipping at Cardiff seems to be going through a quiet time at the moment.  There haven't been many new arrivals, though I have missed 3.
Sava Ocean arrived from Las Palmas on 3rd and sailed for Setubal on 6th.
Tanker Bro Developer arrived from Milford Haven on 5th and returned there on 6th.
Regular container ship Rachel Borchard arrived for Leixoes on 7th and sailed for Liverpool on 8th.   
Faust arrived from Ceuta and later sailed for Newport.
Tanker Bro Gothia (missed this one again) arrived from Milford Haven on 12th and returned there on 13th. Celtic Freedom (missed this one too) brought in a load of timber from Aliaga on 13th and sailed a few days later.

This Damen built multicat arrived on 21st and will be carrying out buoy maintenance in the Bristol Channel and some plough dredging work at Newport and Avonmouth. The photograph shows her carrying out buoy maintenance work in the Solent last year.  Another picture below:

Balmoral at Sharpness

Balmoral had started her Bristol Channel season on 9th July.  On Tuesday 12th July she arrived at Penarth pier for her annual day trip to Padstow.  The picture shows her on 2nd July - at the end of her annual dry docking at Sharpness.
